It’s the age old question: how do you balance getting personal on your business blog?

You’ve probably have tons of things you want to share on your blog, but feel weird doing so because you don’t want to scare your readers away. And it doesn’t help that you’re being told to incorporate “you” into your business.

So how do you get personal on your business blog without turning it into a diary?

Show Your Personality

Even when writing posts related to your niche, you can still get personal by sharing bits of your personality. Kayla’s blog is strictly business, but I still know about her love for hot cocoa and poetry. How? She sneaks little snippets of her interests into her posts. For example, in her post on Twitter bios, she compared Twitter’s character limit to her love of short form poetry. So now not only have I learned about writing an awesome Twitter bio, but I’ve learned something about Kayla that allows me to get to know her better.

Get Personal on Occasion

You can still share things that are going on in your life on your without veering into diary territory. The key is to limit how often you share. One of my favorite ways is to create a weekly or monthly post that tells your readers what you’ve been up to. Kory does a great job of this with her Currently posts. If posts dedicated to your life aren’t your thing, you could also include a short blurb when sharing links. Every week, Sarah lets us in on what’s going on in her life when she shares her Blog Love posts. What’s great about this method is that even if a reader isn’t interested in your life, they’re still gaining value via the links.

Share Your Goals

A great way to connect with your readers and get personal is to share your goals. Melyssa shares her goals weekly, but if that’s too often, monthly or even quarterly is a great compromise. You can give readers a peek into your business by sharing your business goals, but you can also incorporate personal goals as well. Sharing your goals allows you to connect with your audience, as well as providing some transparency, which people love.

Go Behind the Scenes

If you really don’t want to get personal, you can share bits of your life as they relate to your business. Creating a new product? Share a sneak peek. Renting out a new studio? Share a studio tour. People who are interested in your business will love to be included in the behind the scenes. A great example of this is Sophie’s Week Notes. While some of her updates are life related, she shares frequent updates on what she’s working on as well as snapshots of her studio.

Share Lessons Learned

When you run a business, you’re always learning something. Why not share those lessons with others? Not only will you be helping others, but it will allow your audience to connect with you. Lauren recently shared a post with 7 things her dad taught her about business. While I took away a bunch of info from that post, it also let me learn about Lauren and how she grew up in her dad’s gym, which is something I would have not known otherwise.

    1. I know how that feels! I used to post more personal stuff, but when I switched over to this site it didn’t feel right. I think as long as you do what feels right, then you’re fine. There’s no right or wrong when it comes to blogging!
