I’ve discussed before how to customize Click to Tweet links using the Click to Tweet WordPress plugin and CSS, but what if you’re not using WordPress? Or maybe you’d rather not spend all day trying to get your CSS just right. Luckily there’s a solution – graphics! By creating a graphic and linking it to your Click to Tweet link, you can encourage your blog’s readers to share your content. Here’s how to create Click to Tweet graphics for your blog with Canva.

First, sign up for Canva if you don’t already have an account (it’s free!).

Now we’re going to create a new document with custom dimensions. Click on the link labeled use custom dimensions and enter your dimensions. For this example, I chose 700×300, but use whatever works best for your blog. If you want the image to be as wide as your blog area, use that width. If you want it smaller, go smaller.

First, let’s grab a background color. I chose this sunshine yellow from the options they provide, but it is customizable, so you’re not limited to those listed. Just click on the background after you’ve added it and select a new color.

Next, let’s add some text. I chose the subheading option and dragged it onto my document, but feel free to check out the other fun text options available. Enter your text and place it wherever you want. The heading, subheading, and body text options are all customizable, so don’t worry about selecting one over the other.

Now I want to make sure people realize it’s a Tweetable, so I’m going to add a Twitter icon. I also thought it would be fun to add an arrow, so I found one and added it in the same color as my Twitter icon.

Once I was happy with the result, I clicked download in the top menu. Here is my finished graphic:

Now that the graphic is created, we’ll need to head over to the Click to Tweet site to get ourselves a link. Sign into the site with Twitter and enter the text you’d like people to tweet. Don’t forget to include a link to your post as well as your Twitter handle!

After you click generate link, you’ll be presented with an embed code. Because we’re using our own image, you’ll only need the actual URL for the tweet. Copy it and save it somewhere safe.

Go back to your post and add your graphic to your post. In the image options, add the Click to Tweet link.

And that’s it. Your blog readers can now click on the image to tweet out a custom tweet. Check it out below!

  1. This is an awesome post, Allyssa! I use a click-to-tweet plugin to occasionally add these tweet posts on my site but it’s a great idea to also create consistent graphics that match your branding either with Photoshop or Canva! What else do you like to use Canva for?

    1. Thanks Monica! I honestly don’t use Canva, but I know it’s a great tool for those without Photoshop. I’ve actually been brainstorming uses and you can expect a post on it in the near future 🙂

  2. Thank you for this! I use Squarespace and have had ‘click to tweets’ on my to do list for weeks! Never thought of creating an image to make them look attractive instead of having to fanny with formatting code.

  3. Wow!! It’s so great ! I’ve already read your post about how to customise click to tweet and liked it! But I still felt it was not entirely how I wanted it to be. I didn’t know you could do that with click to tweet website ! Nice! Thanks for sharing!

  4. So delighted I found this post! I am a frequent Canva user and really had a hard time nailing down on how to create a simple & effective CTT image. This gave me ideas for other ways to use the same image.

If you want some ideas on other how-to post related to us Canva users, feel free to let me know.

    Thank you, Allyssa.

  5. Alyssa you saved the hair on my head that was about to be pulled out.
Super helpful post, i always get disillusioned with what i can do on my site (not wordpress) but you solved my problems!

  6. Alyssa love this. I think this will be a work around for me. Maybe you know. I have a free WordPress acct (.com). Have not gone .org so can’t use plug ins. This would work right – a work around not having plug ins?

  8. thanks for the post, I am new to WordPress and wondering how to use this for an infographic already created in canva. Not sure I understand where the embed information goes in this step

“Go back to your post and add your graphic to your post. In the image options, add the Click to Tweet link.”

Also I have to look but trying to figure out the best way to also be able to add a pin button to this?

    thanks for your help!

    1. After you’ve created the image in Canva, you would upload the image to WordPress as you normally would. Once the image is uploaded, there’s an option to add a link to the graphic (it’s on the same screen as caption, alt text, title, etc). That’s where you’d add your Click to Tweet link.

As for adding a Pin it button, you’ll need a plugin. I personally like the jQuery pin it button for images plugin (https://wordpress.org/plugins/jquery-pin-it-button-for-images/)
