You’re in the process of growing your business from a side hustle to a full time gig. There are tons of things to consider and plan. It’s enough to make your head spin! One of those things is a website. And while you might think a website is something you can skimp out on and put on the back burner, the truth is, there are so many benefits of a website that one is absolutely vital to the success of your business.

A website can play a huge part in allowing you to escape the cubicle and take your business full time. Sounds amazing, doesn’t it? That’s the beauty of a website. It gives you the power to make that dream of yours a reality. If that’s not convincing enough, here’s a look at 3 benefits of a website for side hustlers.

3 Benefits of a Website for Side Hustlers

1. A Website Increases Visibility

If a business exists, but no one knows they exist, do they really exist?

I don’t mean to get all existential, but think about it. If no one knows a business exists, can they actually survive as a revenue earning business? And if they can’t survive, how long will they really exist for?

That’s why visibility is so crucial to the success of your side hustle. The more visible you are, the more people are aware that you exist. And when people are aware of you, they’ll hire you. Makes sense, right?

There are thousands of people out there that do the same thing you do. The ones that get hired are the ones that people are aware of. So if you want to stand out in a sea of service providers, you have to get on their radar. A website allows you to do that.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve come across random businesses online that I have no need to hire. But when a friend mentions needing to hire someone for XYZ task, I’m able to jump in and save the day because I knew of a business that does just that. Boom, XYZ company suddenly has a new client all because I saw them online and was aware they existed.

Awareness of your business is only as good as the number of people that know you exist. Without a website, how many people do you really think you can reach? Unless you run a TV ad or put up a billboard, you’re going to have to do a whole lot of networking to get your business out there. If only there was a better solution…

Oh, wait, there is! A website! With a website, you’re no longer limited by physical location or the size of your in-person network. Nope. Now the world is your oyster. Sally from way out in the boondocks can be aware of your business and hire you.

Without a website would you likely reach her? Probably not. But thanks to the magical power of the internet, she’s reachable! Think about how many other people you can reach thanks to a website. The amount is just about endless. If that’s not good for a business, I don’t know what is!

But how do people from the far corners of the earth become aware of your website? They search for you! Well, maybe not you in particular, but they’re looking for someone who does what you do. Without a website, you’re not going to show up. It’s like you don’t even exist.

The internet is like a giant Yellow Pages book. If you want people to hire you, you need to be listed!

True story: a few years ago I was in need of a mechanic. No knowing any mechanics, I did what I do for everything else I want to know the answer for: I searched Google. Of course mechanics are a dime a dozen so I was bombarded with tons of listings. But was a listing good enough for me? Nope.

After clicking around for awhile, I finally landed on a shop that had a website. And it wasn’t any old website. No, it was well-designed and informative. Jackpot! You can guess who got my business.

2. A Website Builds Credibility

While visibility played a part in me hiring my mechanic, ultimately what it came down to was credibility. Thanks to my mechanic’s website, they were able to win me over and gain my trust. Before hiring them, I had this picture in my head of what my experience with a shop would be like. I was imagining a dirty location with mechanics that would make me feel uncomfortable.

But their website told a different story. I got to see what their shop looked like and I was impressed. There was also a group photo of the staff. Seeing their friendly faces added a sense of connection and made me feel at ease. Their website essentially allowed me to get to know them, which ultimately led to me trusting them.

Your website can do the same thing for your business. People won’t hire you unless they know, like, and trust you. A website can remove that barrier, thus increasing your odds of getting hired.

So why does a website build like, know, and trust?

Well first of all, we’re in 2017 (almost 2018). I’ve been online for over half my life. There is absolutely no reason why a business shouldn’t be online. I don’t care who you are or what you do. Everyone is online nowadays. If your business doesn’t have a website, I can’t help but wonder why I should hire you. It comes across as unprofessional and lazy and I won’t see you as a legitimate business.

Besides potential clients seeing you as a successful, functioning business, a website allows them to put a face to your business. Back to my mechanic example, remember how I went to their site and saw a group photo of their staff? That photo helped me see their business in a new light. They weren’t just another auto shop. No, they were a husband and wife duo with employees who happened to be friends. That one photo helped me see them as people and not just a business.

Your website has the opportunity to provide your business with personality, whether that’s through photos, witty copy, or your favorite gifs. Use your site to your advantage to let potential clients know the person behind the business.

Because once they get to know who you are, they’ll start to see you as someone they know, like, and trust. And who do people hire? Those they know, like, and trust.

3. A Website Generates Leads

Perhaps the most important benefit of a website is that it generates leads. Yes, if designed correctly, your website will grow your email list and send potential clients knocking at your door.

Think of it this way. Your website has the ability to work for you 24/7. While you have a life and can’t devote every hour of every day to growing your business, your website can! It’s a 24.7 salesperson so you might as well take advantage of it.

However, much like how a store has sales people who require training, your website won’t do what you want it to do unless you tell it to. This means setting it up in a way that’ll direct people to sign up for your email list or book your services. Remember, people need to be guided, they won’t just automatically do something because you want them to.

Guiding potential clients to sign up for your email list starts with creating valuable content. This gets them onto your site in the first place. People won’t magically click over to your site unless there’s something in it for them, so capture their attention with content that solves their problems and appeals to their emotions.

Then once they’re on your site you can lure them onto your email list. How is this done? With more value, of course! Offer something for free in exchange for their email address. Then once they’re on your list, it’s your job to up your know, like, and trust factor. By showing up in their inbox they become familiar with who you are and what you do. And hopefully before you know it, they’ll be ready to buy. And all of that happened thanks to your website.

If you’re working on growing a side hustle and haven’t been paying much attention to your website, you need to make a change! As you can see, your website is an incredibly valuable part of your business. You might as well take advantage of it. Doing so will allow you to build know, like, and trust with potential clients, which in turn will make your business profitable.
